Little Orchard

It was at a 2009 show at the Vancouver Art Gallery that I had a strong reaction to a series of photographs by Scott MacFarland. The photographs were of an overgrown, ‘fallow’ fruit orchard on a property in Vancouver’s Pt. Grey, close to where I grew up. In that area at that time there seemed to be an inverse relationship between decay and property values. Every overgrown and unmanaged garden covered a decaying house fetching millions. I was thinking of that abandon Pt. Grey orchard when I painted this (and of course the movement in Van Gogh’s orchards).
